OLD NEWS

9/29/05 Abi will be playing 4 shows in the Midwest this week: MN, IA, MO, and KS. Check out the Shows page for details.

9/6/05 I'm playing at the finish line of the Tour de Pink this Sunday. All you bikers should come out and ride. If you can't make it, consider donating money for breast cancer awareness and education programs.

And more new reviews on the Press page.

7/24/05 Some amusing, if not particularly critical, reviews of the new CD have been added to the Press page. They like it!

7/15/05 Abi's summer tour begins on Wed July 20 in Minneapolis, MN. Check the Shows page for dates and details.

7/2/04 One of Abi's open mic performances (from 2002?) will appear on a new compliation from Club Passim. The track is an alternate version of Somewhere to Go and is one of only 11 songs chosen from thousands of great open mic performances! Details will follow.

5/23/05 Abi was a winner in the Singer/Songwriter competition last weekend at the Wildflower Festival in Richardson, TX. She performed 4 times over the course of two days and had lots of fun listening to the other songwriters and baking in the hot Texas sun. The other winners were Karen Mal (Austin, TX) and Ian Dickson (McKinney, TX).

5/3/05 Abi's performance at the Kerrville Folk Festival in June 2004 will be featured on a new DVD, Kronicle, that includes highlights from that 18 day music fest. It will be available this year at Kerrville and then through the Kerrville Folk Festival website.

4/24/05 Abi recorded an interview for FM Odyssey that will air on 20 stations next weekend.

4/21/05 Abi is currently on tour in the Southeast. Check her schedule and read all about it in the Journal.

4/12/05 Abi has been named a finalist in the Songwriting Contest at The Wildflower Festival. She will perform in the contest on Saturday morning and at the Acoustic Cafe at a time to be determined.

4/10/05 One Foot Out The Door is being pressed as I write this and will be released on May 17! More details to follow...

3/21/05 March 24th will be proclaimed Abi Tapia Day in Austin, Texas by Mayor Will Wynn! I'll play at the City Council meeting at 5:30, and you can be there in person or watch on cable channel 6.

The April tour to the South is coming up and I'm starting to book summer shows in New England and the Midwest. Stay updated here.

2/17/05 This is a big week for me. In a couple of hours I'll be heading into the mastering studio with my little CD clutched nervously in my hands. I'll finally have to let go and stop changing things which is hard, but it also means the project is amazingly close to being done, which is exciting and relieving (and scary, too!).

That's all great, but what I really wanted to tell you about is the great show on Sunday that you just have to come to. It's a benefit for Chris Gage, the producer of my CD, who had a back injury, subsequent surgery, and a long recovery period (a reason my CD is taking longer than we hoped). This show has an amazing line-up, a silent auction and all the proceeds are going to help pay Chris Gage's medical bills and make up for the income he lost by taking two months off from performing and studio work.

So come celebrate the immenent release of my CD, Chris Gage's slowly but surely healing back, and a amazing music community that takes care of it's own.

Sunday, Feb 20 4-10pm
Scholz Beer Garden
1607 San Jacinto
Austin, Texas

featuring Slaid Cleaves, Eliza Gilkyson, Sara Hickman, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Bruce Robison, Michael Austin, Danny Britt & Red Dawg, Jon Emery, Cowboy Johnson, Frank Meyer, Stop the Truck and Abi Tapia (I'll be playing at 4:30, so get there early!)

2/05/05 I haven't been feeling too newsy lately. All the news seems to be wait wait wait. I'm just hunkering down and working, so I can do public things soon. Thanks for waiting, too.

12/12/04 New Mp3 of the month and new journal entry added to the site. We start mixing the CD this week!

10/06/04 My CD is going to be so good. I can't believe how alive it sounds now that Eamon McLoughlin and Kym Warner from the Greencards have added fiddle and mandolin. Stay tuned for more rough cuts.

9/4/04 Back from the tour and happy to be home in Austin! If you missed it all, refer to the Journal for some of the highlights.

8/12/04 OK. I think I've got it uploaded properly. Check out the music page for the latest incarnation of the song about Iowa that I don't have a title for yet. This is a ROUGH version of what we've recorded of this song so far. Go to the mp3 archive page to hear how it has changed from the original demo. A little sneak peek into the recording process for ya. Then pre-order a copy or two so you can hear how it turns out in the end!

8/8/04 Still on tour. Still updating the journal. When I get the CD unstuck from my car stereo, I'll put up a new tune for you to hear: rough mixes of basic tracks for the new album!

7/13/04 I played at the Eddie's Attic (near Atlanta Georgia) open mic last night which was great fun. I loved hearing other people all night instead of just myself!.I also won the weekly contest which means I get to go back for a showcase at the club. I can't wait cause Hotlanta is da bomb.

7/8/04 I'm on tour for the summer. Read about my adventures in my Journal. Come see me live and say hi!

6/3/04 Last week Chris and I spent 2 days in the studio. We got my guitar down for all seven of the tunes we recorded with Glen and Paul and vocals for four of them. For more on this experience go to the Journal.

5/18/04 Last Thursday, we spent about 6 hours recording bass and drums for 7 tunes. Glen Fukunaga and Paul Pearcy (both of Dixie Chicks' and Terri Hendrix's latest albums) were so dern good and fast! Why can't I play everything near perfect on the first try? Still, I had lots of fun singing and playin' along with those guys. Makes me want to get a band together to play live. That will be a project for the Fall. Right now, I'm focused on getting ready for the summer. My schedule is filling up!

5/4/04 I'm taking pre-orders for the CD now! Help make it happen by giving me the money up-front. Community Supported Art. Yay! Click here for more info.

4/20/04 2 things: I've been chosen as a semi-finalist in the B.W. Stevensen Songwriters Competition at Poor David's Pub in Dallas. And we've got Glen Fukunaga and Paul Pearcy lined up to play bass and drums for the CD. You might know them from . . . like every great CD made in Austin. I'm getting very excited!

3/7/04 I've chosen a studio and producer for my new record! Chris Gage has been putting out some great records recently from his MoonHouse Studio. I'm so excited to be working with him and Christine Albert. We start pre-production this week. Soon I'll let you know how you can help!

It was a long drive to San Diego and back, but with good company like Al Sato and Todd Hoke, saguaros and ocotillos (those are types of cacti, for you city folk) to gaze at, and Smartwater to keep me from drying out, it seemed to fly by. The International Folk Alliance Conference (the reason we drove to San Diego) always feels like its over when things are just getting warmed up. I saw so many old friends and met tons of new ones, stayed up til 4am every night, ate junk food with The Ginn Sisters, heard 63 heartbreaking songs and even saw some brave souls surfing in the winter Pacific. I've got the traveling bug. Booking for the Summer Tour is in full swing. See you soon!

Mp3 of the "month" is updated! This song has been lost for a couple of years. Did you ever hear it live?

11/22/03 I've added a new Mp3 to the music page! I'm going to try to put up a new song once a month, sometimes brand new songs, sometimes old recordings of old songs, but always new to you! This is a good'un: Lone Star with Lloyd Maines on Dobro!

11/5/03 I'll be playing and singing at the Austin Folk House this Sunday. It's going to be a wonderful show because House Concerts are just the best. Please come.

10/28/03 I am going to make a new CD. I am. Positive thinking. Say it and you'll do it, right? OK, then. Here we go.

I've got so many people inspiring me these days. Mucho thanks to Terri Hendrix and Trish Murphy.

10/13/03 Hey! I'm alive and well. Been getting a lot of calls and e-mails today from people wondering about that. I'm so sad and overwhelmed to hear that another 27-year-old Abigail Tapia was found dead in California this morning. I hope some answers can be found for her friends and family. Lots of thoughts and emotions are running around in me about this. Mostly I'm grateful to be here and so well taken care of. Thanks for being concerned about me. Hope I see you all in person real soon.

7/23/03 I'm getting ready for a Summer Tour. I think I got the seasons and directions figured out this time. North in Summer, yes that's the ticket! I'm so excited to see new people and places and drive around this big ol' country! Last night, I got to peek at Norah Jones's tourbus. I'm just a little jealous. I'd be so nice to have lots of friends on the road with me. But, uhg, think of the parking headaches! I do get to see lots of friends and family when I travel and stop and whatever junk shop catches my eye. I just went to the library and found some books on tape and CDs for the highway. One I've got to read in the next week is The Center of Everything. I'll be playing at Laura Moriarty's reading next week. Hope I see YOU sometime soon!

5/2/03 I feel like the Semifinalist of the year! I was named third alternate in the Wildflower Festival's Songwriter Contest, and I was selected to play at the Ballad Tree on May 22nd at the Kerrville Folk Festival. Can't wait to experience this legendary festival!

3/26/03 I'm making more friends and connections here in Austin. Last week I joined the Austin Conspiracy of Performing Songwriters and the Austin Songwriters Group. I'm so looking forward to working with and learning from all the dedicated and talented folks in this town.

I'm so excited! The Austin Songwriters Group has awarded me a scholarship to attend a songwriting workshop at the Old No. 9 Road House. Terri Hendrix and Lloyd Maines are two of my favorites and they are leading it. I'll have some stories when I come back. . .

2/20/03 The "Why did I go North in February?" tour is just about over. I have a couple more shows in New England, but I get to fly to those, so it doesn't really seem like a tour. Despite the 4,000 miles of driving and single-digit temperatures, I had a super-fun couple of weeks. Thanks mostly to Nadine and Natalia who continue to totally kick my ass. I'm so happy to have such talented people all around me, making me wanna be better. Speaking of talented people, I think I could've lived for a couple more weeks at the Folk Alliance Conference in Nashville. There was a string band every 10 feet, a showcase every 10 minutes and friends and folk celebrities everywhere. Forget the business and schmoozing, I just wanna listen!

12/19/02 Austin, Texas Here I am. It's a big blue sky and 70 degrees today. I don't know if its the newness or the extra two hours of light or the way people I've just met "introduce me around," but I feel so much better and lighter and more energetic an hope-full here. Feel like I've found that fertile black earth where I can grow into my biggest, best, most beautiful self. That's scary to say out loud. What if it doesn't work? Ooooh, I feel better now that I've tempered the feeling with a little doubt. Still working on that being happy thing.

10/28/02 I suppose I should be wandering the rocky coast of Maine pondering my 4 years here, wondering if the future is as unknowable as the great gray ocean, but I'm not. I'm watching Days of Our Lives, eating cookies 'n' cream ice cream, and avoiding packing all my worldly belongings into a Saturn sedan (at least it's 4 doors). The bitter way to look at it: I've emotionally checked out of here long ago and a rain drenched walk by the windy water would only reinforce my reasons for leaving. A better way to look at it: I've lived fully here, done most of the things I'd hoped to do and accepted that I won't do lots of things. I don't need to get to the top of Mt. Khatadin or book one more show. I've seen some beautiful parts of Maine and I've played to lots of great people. That's enough. It's time for new hopes for a new place. I send change of address cards instead of saying good-bye.

Thanks to the Portland Phoenix for saying Good Luck to me!:

More bad news, at least for us: "Sibilance" got word this week that Abi Tapia will be leaving town to relocate to Texas. She's a Southern girl, anyway, born in Alabama, so we can't say it doesn't make sense, especially as she's pretty much done all she can in these parts, having already won the 2001 Songwriters Showdown at the Maine Arts Festival. Call in to catch her this Friday, October 25, on WMPG's "Local Motives" and wish her good luck.

9/25/02 Well, I'm 26 now. I'm starting to feel old, though I'm sure many of you would tell me I've only just begun, the same reminder a friend with 307,000 miles on his car gave me. I know, I know, and it's good. Good to begin. I'm going to begin in Austin in a few weeks. Keep in touch. Lots of changes coming up!

6/20/02 150,000 clicked over on my odometer just as I was passing the Tanger Outlet Mall on I-80 in Iowa. I tried not to take that as any kind of sign. But I have crossed that milestone, attended my first college reunion and moved back into my car for a summer of touring and transition. Things are kind of wonky with no home on solid ground, but I'm really looking forward to being in the car and traveling with Nadine and Natalia. Check out the shows page and see if we're coming to a town near you!
