MP3 OF THE MONTH

ARCHIVES

Nothing to Hold Me Down (Live)

This one was recorded live at Eddie's Attic on June 15. I got lost on the way and arrived right before I was supposed to go on. Sometimes that nervous energy works in performance. It felt terrible at the time, but doesn't sound so bad on tape.

Waiting for a Ring

Since June is the month of Weddings, I thought I'd post a song I wrote last summer called "Waiting for a Ring." It's not autobiographical, just inspired by some people I know. My Grandma did really say that, though.

The Way to My Heart

With all this talk about radio, I thought I'd post another track from my appearance on Eklektikos on KUT. John Aielli is one of the wackiest and most beloved DJs in Austin. Make sure you listen to the end for our *brilliant* discussion of the love life and career of Jennifer Lopez.

Get It And Go

This is the song that The Ginn Sisters have recorded on their new album. Look for it to be released in May. Wahoo! Here's my version. I was still pretty sick, but it makes it seem more authentic and raw, right?

Born Again

I itch. I'm trying not to scratch. Yes, it's poison ivy for (at least) the 4th time this year. Can you understand why I have written two songs referencing PI? Here's #2 recorded at Ruta Maya at the beginning of October.

Drive Away Slow

This was a request. Actually someone wanted a copy of Drive Away Slow exactly like I played it at Stella's in August, but this is as close as I've got, all imperfect and uncontrolled. This one was recorded at Live Oak Coffeehouse in Cedar Park, TX.

Calamine Lotion

A live recording from the Spring tour. April 21, 2005 at the Main Street Cafe, Homestead, FL.

Hand Over Your Heart

This one was recorded live on the air on KUT's Eklektikos with John Aielli 5/13/05.

Cried Wolf

This is it! The finished, mixed, mastered version of the song that kicks off the new CD. If you have decent speakers on your computer, it might sound purty good.

Cried a River v 2.1

The evolution of this song continues. Harmonies and electric guitar have been added, and we're still not done! For ealier versions look below.

Back to Back

Another recording from the 6/30/04 show at Uncommon Ground in Chicago with bonus commentary on the weather! The "technical difficulties" I refer to in the end are "harmonica holder readjustment" and "dropping of the pic". Some critics might call that sloppy performance skills, but we all know it's part of the charm and magic of live performance.

For A While

Another rough version of a tune for the upcoming CD. The town I want to leave is not Austin!

Cried Wolf

Another crying song, but a little happier this time. This version was recorded live this summer (6/04)at Uncommon Ground in Chicago.

Cried a River v 2.0

Yes it is the same song I posted last time. I thought it might be fun for you to hear the evolution of the song from the way I wrote it originally, through the edits and layers of the recording process. We're not done yet!

Cried A River

I still haven't decided on a title for this one, but it's the one about Iowa oft requested by Midwesterners. An edited version has been recorded for the new ablum!

This Heart

I didn't know I could forget about whole songs which I'd already performed, but I can. I was recently cleaning out a box of demos and came accross a recording of the session I did for the Gigafone Record in 2001. Two of the songs went on Gigafone's Compilation, but this one didn't make the cut and I don't know if I've sung it since. It was really strange to listen to myself sing and not know what words were coming next. Slowly I remembered the situation and feelings that inspiried the song. Maybe I didn't really like it then, or maybe I am just absent-minded. Maybe I'll bring it back. What do you think?

Somewhere to Go

Happy New Year! This tune was recorded last January and feels appropriate for resolution time. I think it will be changed quite a bit for the studio album, so here's your chance to hear the original demo.

Lone Star

This song was recorded in April 2003 at the Old No. 9 Songwriting Workshop. Terri Hendrix and Lloyd Maines were our amazingly generous teachers, and Mr. Maines adds Dobro to this tune! Mucho Thanks to ASG and Old No. 9 for awarding me a scholarship to this workshop!
